MLAs are back at work in the Manitoba Legislature.

The third session of the 41st Manitoba Legislature resumed on Wednesday and the government plans to deal with a number of issues over the next few months.

“We’ll be sitting right into the month of June and there are a few things on the docket because we have some legislation carried over from last fall. We will be introducing a number of other pieces of legislation over the next several weeks as well,” said Government House Leader Cliff Cullen.

A key part of this session will be a new budget that will be introduced on Monday, March 12.

“We continue the process of improving Manitoba’s financial situation. It remains a challenge for sure because we were left a substantial deficit and a lot of debt and it’s really trying to corner the corner on the deficit, the year over year budget.”

Cullen adds the government has made progress on that front by reducing the size of the deficit. “Quite frankly it is a work in progress and there will be some positive news for Manitobans on the budget next Monday.”

Another topic the government has to deal with is marijuana and bringing in measures for the safe and responsible sale of marijuana.

‘We certainly have some legislation around marijuana and clearly the federal government is bringing forward the cannabis probably in July or August and we have to get a regulatory framework together and we have to get that right.”
