The R.M. of Morris is considering another opportunity to better manage household waste. Staff are currently compiling results of a recent survey sent to ratepayers, gauging their interest in participating in a compost pick-up program.

Currently, the Municipality has ad hoc composting sites set up at both the Rosenort and Lowe Farm waste sites. "We think this might be a good opportunity for us to become more organized about managing compost," said Reeve Ralph Groening.

Initially, any compost pick-up program would be primarily focused on the Municipality's large urban centre, Rosenort, where most of the initial interest has already been expressed, according to Groening. Although, he noted Council is always willing to expand it there is a value, a need, and an interest from other parts of the municipality.

"It's very similar to the initial response we had back in the early days of recycling," said Groening. "I know that seems like a long time ago, and it's become kind of a central service that we offer, but yes, there is more interest in how we manage and impact our environment. And so, we want to work with our community and do whatever we can to minimize the negative impact on our local environment."

One the results of the survey have been compiled, Council and administration will mull the information, and any possible plan forward, at its upcoming annual planning session.

Groening noted, MWM Environmental, which currently runs the municipality's recycling and garbage pick-up program, has indicated its interest in adding on a compost component.
