Progress continues at Emerson's new golf course and clubhouse.

"We're in the final stages," said spokesperson Wayne Arseny.

Arseny said the clubhouse is ready for its final paint job and flooring work.

"We're already selling memberships for the facility, so things are proceeding ahead," he said.

There will also be a railway-themed mural painted inside of the clubhouse.

"Another added thing we're quite excited about is the local arts community is becoming involved. Sharon Cory and company are going to be painting a mural of a train on the face of the bar and that's going to be done this week."

Initially, the town had looked at using the old Canadian Pacific rail station as a clubhouse, but decided against the idea due to the condition of the building.

Weather will have a big impact on the exact date the golf course can open. Arseny said they aren't worried about flooding, which was an issue at the old course. However, an early spring will mean the grass can green earlier.

"If we're going to be getting a lot of spring rains, you can't go on a course and do the work necessary as quickly as possible," Arseny explained.

An open date of early or mid-May is expected for the new golf course, but the clubhouse might need a couple weeks longer.

"We're looking for an operator at this particular point," said Arseny. "When people golf they want to have a meal and everything else, so we're looking at these two things kind of coinciding."

There were some unexpected costs involved in the building process, which added to the total cost of the facility.

"The sewer and water connection, bringing them in, the gas line connection, there was no gas on the east side of the river, so those were added expenditures," said Areseny.

The project has been in the works for over 3 years.
