Regional Connections Altona is having a 'get ready for winter' educational event for newcomer families on Nov. 21 at 4pm.

Samantha Braun, Integration Worker at Regional Connections, said the event will be a useful for newcomers of all ages.

"This year I decided to do it a little differently and make it more... family oriented," said Braun.

"We're doing a themes based evening," she explained. "People are going to learn some valuable facts about how to survive Canadian winter in a relaxed and fun way."

Braun noted some people have never experienced winter or extremely cold temperatures.

"We get lots of questions around what to wear... driving, school closures, how cold is too cold and what is windchill."

Braun said that four stations will be set up. In one area parents will be dressing their children in proper winter gear. In another area people will learn about driving safety and tools to keep in your car.

The third session is about understanding weather reports and school closure reports. The last session will help inform newcomers on how to safely shovel snow, keeping back strain and injury in mind.

"Those are our main ones for this year and then we're going to see how it goes and hopefully have it grow for next year," said Braun.

Elaine Burton, Volunteer Coordinator, added that Regional Connections in Morden will also be holding the same type of event based around winter driving safety on Nov. 22 at 7pm.

Burton encourages people to visit their website or facebook page to find out more.
