Semi and delivery trucks are banned from parking on residential driveways in Winkler for the next 90 days.

While council loosened up the year-round by-law recently, the ban still remains for the spring months when heavy trucks can rip up asphalt roads. When the ground is frozen the chances of causing damage are minimized. Trucks over 15,000 lbs are also asked to stick to the designated truck routes, unless traveling to a business or specific destination. Upon leaving the destination point, drivers are required to return by the shortest way back to a truck route.

"Along with Spring comes the possibility of street damage when heavy loads are taken down routes which are designed for light traffic," Director of Works and Operations Peter Froese explains. "City staff would appreciate the cooperation of all delivery trucks to plan their routes carefully to minimize the damage to streets."

He notes City of Winkler crews will be monitoring the streets for damage and making repairs as needed.

According to city by-laws, the parking of un-laden semi-trucks with a GVW of 15,000 pounds or greater on residential driveways is not permitted for 90 days following the start of the spring weight road restrictions set out by the Province of Manitoba. This year the restriction began at 6:00 am on Wednesday, March 20.
