The South Central Cancer Resource received a cheque Thursday afternoon to help fund an initiative to support people with lymphedema, a side effect of cancer treatment.

Jeff and Marilyn Appelt, of Appelt's Diamonds, handed over $2,554 to the local organization because a number of their employees have had cancer over the years. Since October last year, anyone coming in to the Morden jewellery store to replace a watch battery could choose to donate money in lieu of payment.

"We were blown away with the response from the people in the area," said Jeff, who's grandfather started the company in downtown Morden in 1938.

"Without [the community], it wouldn't be possible."

Lymphedema often occurs in the extremities or in the torso. The program dedicates $500 each fiscal year (October to September) to people requiring specialized clothing which gently squeezes the affected area, stimulating proper flow of the fluid. These pressure sleeves or leggings can cost hundreds of dollars.

"We're helping people who get lymphedema after they've had their cancer diagnosis," said Deb Thiessen, clinical resource coordinator at SCCR.

Thiessen shared the support of local businesses puts a smile on her face.

"They're truly excited about what we're doing and that makes us excited as well," she said.

"It reinforces that what we're doing is important."
