Genesis House in Winkler received a nearly $5,000 boost on Friday from Scoular, a grain company with local offices in the Pembina Valley.

Scoular's Cassy Harder explains staff donated money or purchased items from the shelter's wish list.

She notes Genesis House holds a special place in her heart after experiencing abuse first hand. "I never had an opportunity to come to a place like this... I was so happy we chose Genesis House."

Along with the funds, staff donated items like toys, high chairs, backpacks and purses.

"A kid might not have a backpack, and neither would a woman. Often when you are coming or going you need something to carry your things around," Genesis House Executive Director Ang Braun says.

Scoular staff also took time Friday to volunteer at the facility, helping with yardwork and planting flower beds.
