Farmers in the Red River Valley region continue to forge ahead with this year's seeding operations, and some producers have already finished planting this year's crops.

That's the case for Winkler area farmer Jack Froese who says this has been one of the smoothest seasons for seeding in many years.

"We were very fortunate with the land being almost perfect because soil sub-moisture was good, the top soil needed a little rain which we got yesterday, but it allowed us to seed up and down the fields without any problems at all," said Froese.

Temperatures last week dipped just below the freezing mark, but Froese says it appears most of their plants weathered that situation fairly well and feels they should be clear of that threat now.

"We were a little bit concerned because most of our canola was up the other night when we had a temperature of -1 Celsius, but so far things are looking OK."

The Froese farm is growing canola, corn, soybeans, dry beans and wheat this year.

He adds weeds are beginning to emerge in their fields which means spraying operations are just around the corner.
