Summer construction in Altona is underway, with a third sidewalk repair project finishing up this week.

So far this year, all of the sidewalk construction took place in the Northwest area of town with a total of 975 ft removed and replaced. The sites included 6th Avenue, 4th

Jeremy Funk, Public Works Foreman, says drainage is also a priority this summerStreet, and Centre Avenue.

More sidewalk construction can be expected after the Sunflower Festival at the end of the month, says Altona's Public Works/Transportation Foreman Jeremy Funk.

Funk states future projects will include more sidewalk repair, drainage, and downtown brick work. The timeline for these projects will depend on time and weather.

“Hopefully we will be able to do some more drainage, get an excavator to come and fix some of the ruts in the ditches and just help things to flow a little better,” he said.

Funk explained the reason for the brick work happening downtown later this summer.

“We will remove and then fix the sand base underneath and then replace the brick ... over time they've shifted a lot and there's a lot of curbs and edges that have fallen away, so we wanted to fix those and make those a little more accessible.”

He also stated that Altona's biggest street repair project this summer was down Ash Street, which will be open again by the end of this week.

The Ash street construction was necessary due to a different type of concrete mix used in the 1980's, said Funk.

Ash Street was Altona's largest street repair project this summer
