"It's a good problem to have."

That from Western School Division (WSD) Superintendent Stephen Ross as enrollment continues to skyrocket.

"Schools are good places with great exciting things going on and everyone is coping well."

Last year, the division saw one of the highest increases by percent at 4.6, this year they've nearly reached 7 percent.

"A pretty significant number of new students," Superintendent Stephen Ross says. "That has surpassed what we planned for this fall."

In total, WSD has seen 2,005 students enrolled in four schools, with the expectation of 65 more before January. The growth continues to put the pressure on classroom space across all grades from Kindergarten to high school. One out of every four students in K-8 is attending class in a portable classroom.

However, Ross says they've been encouraged by support from the Province including new portables and indications a new school may be in the works.

"This year we've been able to create resource rooms in schools we didn't have space for previously," Ross adds. "Generally, things are good... but certainly lots of new kids and that's exciting."

With more students, Ross says the board will look at their staffing allotment and consider if any adjustments are necessary.
