Mild temperatures this month may have started to melt the snow but haven't yet taken a toll on area snowmobile trails. Vern Wieler, President of Border Valley Sno Goers, says the trail conditions aren't bad.

"For the most part they're looking pretty good so far. We had a really really good base of snow before the mild weather came around."

He adds there was a lot of traffic on the trails this past weekend, a common occurrence throughout this riding season.

"I guess we were ahead of the ball compared to the clubs to the west and north of us. I think when they were having issues with their equipment and stuff, I think we had a lot of out-of-the-area riders come our way."

Despite all of this good news, Wieler still welcomes the slow return to winter that is forecast for this week. As the days go on the mercury is anticipated to dip farther below zero.

"Obviously we don't want (the trails) to deteriorate completely."

He says the trails will get a bit icy and hard but the cold will also allow the groomer to head out for another pass.

Wieler also hopes for more snow in the forecast, noting another blanket of the white stuff would help keep the trails around until March.
