While the recent blanket of snow may have snowmobile enthusiasts dusting off their machines, RCMP are cautioning riders to be safe.

RCMP Morden Detachment Supervisor, Corporal Darcy Thiessen reminds residents to be careful of water which may be hiding beneath the below.

"There's definitely a lot of water that isn't frozen," said Thiessen. "So you have to be very careful when you're in the ditches."

Thiessen said there can be around two to three feet of water in some of the deeper ditches.

With the snow on top of the water, Thiessen said the snow doesn't allow the water underneath to freeze which can cause sleds to become submerged.

"Depends how you go into the water. If you fall off the snowmobile, you can be under two or three feet of water," said Thiessen. "Panic may set in and you never know what happens after that."

Thiessen also reminds riders to wear your protective equipment.
