After almost an entire month, the RM of Piney is lifting their local state of emergency.

“I’ve never seen that much water come down at once,” offers Reeve Wayne Anderson. “In a matter of a couple of hours, we had five inches of rain.”

During past floods, Anderson says there are typically between five and ten bad spots that requiring municipal clean-up crews. This year, he notes, there are over fifty.

Crews have been adept at dealing with the damages caused by the downpour and the Reeve says that they are nearing completion on their reconstructive work. The total damage estimate is still unknown, but Anderson expects the total to be below $100,000.

“We’re still doing inventory right now,” says Anderson, “but everything has been fixed up except for two sites.”

In regard to damage costs, Anderson says he is hoping for an announcement from the province’s Disaster Financial Assistance Program.

“We will apply for that,” says the Reeve, “but, of course, you have to proceed on the basis that maybe it won’t happen.”
