Students in Altona had the opportunity to hear a presentation from storm chaser Chris Chittick Thursday. He is known for his appearances on Tornado Hunters and Storm Chasers.

Chittick was able to share how his year went in terms of storm chasing and share some other stories along the way.

He said it was a bit of a slower season this year, but recalled a day where he was able to locate and see five tornados in one day. Chittick added these tornados were all near the Red River in Texas and went over into Oklahoma.

The highlight for this year for himself would have been following hurricane Harvey.

"We got into the eye wall. We had sustained winds of like 140 mph and that was for around three hours," said Chittick. "We were in a rented mini-van, because it was a last minute thing. The mini-van held up well."

With hurricanes not being an environmental factor in Manitoba, Chittick said Canadians have been learning more about them through media.

Chittick said storms do need people to be on the ground gathering information, but at the same time safety should be your first concern.

"It's dangerous. I'm not going to try and pad it in any way," said Chittick.
