A 16-year-old Winkler resident is facing charges of assault and mischief over $5,000 after a break and enter.

On January 23, at approximately 1:30 a.m Winkler Police Service were dispatched to a residence on Victoria St.

Police learned that one of the two suspects was the son of the homeowners and that both suspects were heavily intoxicated by alcohol and drugs. The homeowners managed to remove the suspects from the home, however the son broke back into the residence using a snow shovel, causing damage to the home. While inside, the accused assaulted his mother and then fled the scene. Both suspects were located a short distance away and placed under arrest.

The first male, a 16-year-old resident of Winkler, was arrested for assault, mischief over $5000 and two counts of breaching a probation order). The second male, an 18-year-old resident of Winkler, was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and released with a verbal caution the following morning once sober.

Not included in last week’s report, police also received two completely separate disclosures of historic sexual assaults involving children, both of which are still under investigation. The suspect in each assault was known to the victims’ family.

January 22 – Police received a report of damage to a vehicle that was broken into while parked on Roblin Boulevard East. The damage consisted of a broken driver’s side window and the driver’s side door was found open. Nothing was noted to be missing from the vehicle.

Police were advised of a theft that had taken place at Dollar Tree which involved two females and one male. This file is still under investigation.

January 23 – At approximately 1:30 a.m. police were dispatched to a residence on Victoria Street regarding a Break & Enter and assault in progress. January 24 – Police received a report of a Break & Enter to a tool trailer parked at a business on Roblin Boulevard East. Several tools were stolen from the locked trailer, and the padlock securing the trailer was found to be cut. While investigating this incident police were also informed of a nearby vehicle that was found with the trunk and doors ajar and its stereo was stolen. A nearby shed and two other trailers on the property were also found with open doors however nothing was noted to be missing.

Police were dispatched to a residence on Southview Drive regarding an aggressive female who was uncooperative with ambulance paramedics. Police attended and spoke with the female who advised that she was now fine and paramedics were satisfied with police speaking to the female.

January 25 – Police attended a residence on Southgate Drive upon receiving a report of a domestic dispute between a female and her boyfriend. The female requested that her boyfriend be removed from the residence, and after confirming that no physical assault had taken place police provided the male with a ride to his mother’s house.

Police were notified of a mini-van that was thought to be stolen from the driveway of a residence on 8th Street South. Upon further investigation police learned that the mini-van was repossessed and not in fact stolen.

January 26 – Police received a report of several tools that were stolen from a job site on Merlin Drive between January 17th and January 24th.

Police were advised of a Break & Enter to a residence on 3rd Street South which resulted in the theft of multiple items from the home. The renters previously living in the home had recently been evicted and the locks were changed. This file is still under investigation.

Police received a report of theft from Reitman’s that occurred on January 22nd involving a male and female. The male distracted store staff while the female left the store with several pairs of pants which she did not pay for.

While on patrol police observed a vehicle with an inoperable headlight and conducted a traffic stop on Kimberly Road. Upon speaking with the driver police learned that her driver’s license was currently suspended and she was not permitted to drive. The 30 year old driver of the vehicle was issued a ticket for Drive While Disqualified and the vehicle was towed from the scene. Police then provided the driver and passenger with a ride to a local gas station.

Police were notified of an attempted fraud that had taken place regarding an elderly couple that received a phone call from an individual posing as their grandson. The fraudster claimed that he was injured in the Philippines and needed money. The couple attended both Wal-Mart and Tempo in an attempt to send money to the individual, however staff at both locations warned the couple that this was likely a fraud. As a result, no money was transferred to the fraudster.

January 27 – Police were dispatched to Tim Horton’s regarding an intoxicated male who was causing a disturbance at the restaurant. Police located the male on the parking lot and observed that the male had slurred speech, smelled of liquor and was unable to maintain his balance. Police also found the male to be in possession of an open bottle of liquor. The 29 year old male was subsequently arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and transported to the Winkler Police Service. He was released the following morning once sober with a ticket for Consume Liquor in a Public Place.

Police were dispatched to Ardene’s where store staff had one shoplifter in custody who attempted to steal two pairs of jeans from the store. Police attended and arrested the 15-year-old female for Theft Under $5000 and transported her to the Winkler Police Service, where she was later released to her parents with a Police Caution to a Young Person.

Police were advised of a suspicious person in the CIBC ATM lobby and attended to find a male and female inside. Both individuals were advised they could not loiter inside the ATM lobby and agreed to depart the scene.

January 28 – Police checked a suspicious vehicle parked on the Southland Mall parking lot and while speaking  with the two occupants noted an odour of liquor. Upon closer examination an open case of liquor was found in the back hatch area of the vehicle. The driver complied to a demand for a breath sample and the result obtained was a “Warn” reading. The male’s driver’s license was subsequently suspended for 72 hours and his vehicle was towed from the scene. The passenger of the vehicle, who was sober and had his own vehicle at the scene, agreed to provide the driver with a ride home.

Police were requested to attend a residence on Main Street in order to check on the wellbeing of a female residing at that location. Police learned that the female and her husband had been arguing and police determined that no assault had taken place. The female agreed to attend Genesis House for the night.

Police were dispatched to a residence on Orion Lane as the result of a noise complaint. Police attended and found several friends who were having a party inside the garage. Police issued the occupant a verbal warning and she agreed to stop the party.
