Friends and family will gather in Altona today to celebrate the life of Linie Friesen.

Friesen passed away late last week at the age of 97, following a brief illness.

Friesen was one of four women who founded the MCC Thrift Shop in Altona, which was organized in 1972 as a way to contribute to the international relief work of Mennonite Central Committee. That concept has now spread to over 100 thrift shops across North America with an annual income of more than 16 million dollars.

She was also a big supporter of the arts, becoming one of the founding members of the Southern Manitoba Choral Society, and she helped spearhead the establishment of a public library in Altona.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held today at 2:00 p.m., at Seeds Church in Altona.
