After nearly two years of construction, the new Tabor Home in Morden is getting closer to its completion date.  Morden's Deputy Mayor Irvin Wiebe had the chance to tour the new facility earlier this month.

Wiebe said the new home is absolutely beautiful, adding with the high ceilings and the many windows the atmosphere is very inviting.

Although there are still a number of things to complete, at this point the painting is almost finished, the flooring has been put in, and most of the millwork has been installed.  "What really struck me was how spacious everything was," said Wiebe.  "The home is 78,000 square feet, which is two and a half times the size of the old Tabor Home.  And the 100 resident rooms are large and have nice windows, a mechanical lift, they even have a television in every room."

Due to the capital restraints of our current government, Wiebe notes this could very well be the last personal care home built in our province with all these amenities.  The price tag of each resident room at Tabor is $380,000, and Wiebe says the PCs are now talking about reducing that support to $135,000 per room.  "We may have one of the last of the best looking homes in all of Manitoba for a long time."

As for the timeline, Wiebe says the goal is to have the construction substantially complete in April, which was the original contract. He says from there the next step is getting all furniture, supplies, and equipment put in place.  He says the one thing that's always a bit of an unknown is the commissioning, which is a testing of all of the functions, like the heating and cooling.  Wiebe says depending on how long the commissioning process takes, it could be June before the new home is occupied.
