The following is the Winkler Police report for the period of January 23 to 29, 2017, as submitted by the department.

A total of 60 files were opened for the week of January 23rd to the 29th.  The following is a sampling of these files:

January 23:  At approximately 10:00 a.m., police were called to the Real Canadian Superstore where a Loss Prevention Officer had apprehended a 23-year-old female accused of stealing several items from the store.  Having no previous charges or convictions related to theft, the female was served a written caution by police and was released without charges.

January 23:    Police received a report of a theft of copper wire from a business on Cargill Road.  The suspect/s broke into the business sometime over the weekend of January 20 to 22, 2017 and stole a quantity of copper wire.  The incident remains under investigation.

January 24:  At approximately 6:03 p.m., officers were called to investigate loud screaming coming from a suite in an apartment on 2nd Street.  Police attended the named apartment and found a highly intoxicated 49-year-old female causing the disturbance.  Police attempted unsuccessfully to engage in conversation with the female who was very uncooperative and continuously yelled at officers.  As a result of the noise being caused by the female, she was placed under arrest for Breaching the Peace.  The female was held in custody until sober, at which time she was released without charges.

January 26: A third arrest was made in relation to the break-in and attempted copper wire theft that was interrupted by police on January 21, 2017.  In the days following this incident, members from the Morden and Winkler Police Services continued to investigate the location of copper wire previously stolen from the same victim.  This investigation led to the Winkler Police Service arresting a 48-year-old male from Reinfeld who is facing a charge of Possess Property Obtained by Crime.  He was released on a Promise to Appear in Morden Provincial Court on February 28, 2017.  This incident remains under investigation at this time.

January 28:  At approximately 11:05 p.m., officers attended an address on Main Street South after receiving a report of a possible dispute between a mother and son.  Police discovered that a 17-year-old male had been arguing with his mother and had thrown a phone charging cord at her, striking her in the face.  The male youth was arrested for the assault, as well as for breaching a Probation Order, and was later released on a Promise to Appear in Morden Provincial Court on March 14, 2017.  

January 29:  At approximately 7:10 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on the east side of the Southland Mall.  While speaking with the driver, police observed evidence of marihuana possession inside the vehicle.  The driver was placed under arrest and a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a quantity of marihuana and the marihuana extract known as “Shatter”.  The 18-year-old male is facing charges of Possess Marihuana, Possess Marihuana Resin, and two counts of Breach Probation.  He was released on a Promise to Appear in Morden Provincial Court on March 21, 2017.
