It's going to cost a little more money to bring waste material to the Altona/Rhineland landfill site.

Altona's committee of the whole is recommending a new rate schedule to be implemented on July 1st. Rhineland Council has already approved the new rates.

The rate for general garbage will jump from $45.00 to $50.00 per metric tonne while the flat fee for garbage under 200 kilograms will remain unchanged.

Clean shingles brought to the landfill will increase from $35.00 to $40.00 a metric tonne and waste materials from outside of Rhineland Municipality will be subject to a $75 per tonne rate.

Town CAO Dan Gagne says if you compare landfill tipping fees across the country, the rates charged here are very reasonable.

"In the near future, the proposed waste diversion site at the landfill will provide opportunities for residents to avoid some of the tipping fees when it comes to disposing of wood, steel, electronics, mattresses and other products that can be filtered out of the landfill and be reused or repurposed. Some of these may be free or some may be at a much lower cost. That way we can encourage people to save some money by sorting their waste before it goes to the landfill."

The details on how ratepayers will be able to save money by sorting their waste will likely come later in the year once the waste diversion site has been activated.
