Garden enthusiasts are anxiously anticipating getting their green thumbs to work as the weather consistently hits about zero.

Snow may still be on the ground, but CFAM Radio 950 Lawn and Garden Journal host, Carla Hrycyna, says it's not too early to prepare for the spring plant.

"Assessing and taking the memory of what you did last year. Definitely you want to go and start looking at some of the seed racks to get the best selections that are on there before some of the good finds get picked over. One thing also you could probably do on a beautiful sunny day, maybe if you can get to your garden shed start cleaning up some of your garden tools."

She notes gardeners should be sharpening their tools and doing other maintenance, so once it's time to start planting you are ready to go.

As for planting trends, coral tones will be a dominant colour. Hrycyna says Living Coral is the Pantone colour of the year which will mean gardeners will likely be showing off oranges, peaches, pinks, and corals.

For those wanting to ensure their lawns are green and healthy for the summer, Hrycyna recommends to stay off areas saturated in moisture, if you walk on flooded grass it can compact the soil.

This applies to gardens as well, says Hrycyna, waiting for the dirt to dry completely to avoid compaction, which will create less work for you if you need to aerate the soils.

Veteran gardeners are ready to begin their seasonal planting, but for those new to the hobby creating a garden can feel a bit daunting.

Hrycyna has some tips for beginners.

"If you're starting, planning is vital especially if you're going to be doing the landscaping part of it. Don't go big, if you have the overall picture of what you want your landscape to look like ahead of the game, maybe target one part of the yard and concentrate on that, so you don't get overwhelmed."

If starting an outdoor garden is too intimidating, Hrycyna says container gardening is a simple option to get your hands in the dirt, and a way to set up potted plants on a deck to create a green tapestry.
