Vyshyvanka Day, a day where Ukrainians wear special national clothing, was celebrated Sunday evening by Ukrainians in the Pembina Valley.

Yevgeniya Tatarenko organized a small gathering at Morden Park to maintain the tradition of the special day outside of Ukraine.

"Old, old Ukrainian people believed [the embroidered shirts] can help them to protect themselves or the kids," Tatarenko explained.

Artifacts were found in the Ukraine, dating back to the sixth century, which depicts a man wearing a long sleeved shirt with embroidery on the chest, proving the clothes have been worn by the Ukrainian people and their ancestors for well over 1000 years.

Today, the shirts are worn for fashion and to represent Ukrainian heritage.

"We had some stories from adults and kids about the meanings of Vyshyvanka," said Tatarenko.

There was also singing and dancing at the celebration.
