A local club is looking for more volunteers to continue to provide the Pembina Valley with the chance to cross-country ski.

The Boundary Trails Nordic Club has several kilometres of groomed trails, located on the property of Vera Froese and her husband Phil.

When people come to the trails, they'll notice a building, operated by the Nordic Club, which offers ski and boot rentals. She says in recent years they've gotten a lot of interest from residents in the trails.

Vera Froese volunteers at the Nordic Club, located on their land in the Burwalde Woods.

However, the club doesn't have enough volunteers to handle this influx of people.

"We can't have the Nordic Centre open unless we have enough volunteers, that's the one big thing that is a problem. I would hate to lock the Nordic Centre because we have so many families coming and wanting to rent skis."

Unfortunately, Froese says many from the ski club may feel unqualified to volunteer, but the shouldn't feel that way. She explains volunteers are there to greet people, help people with rentals, and show people where the trails are.

For Vera skiing is a significant part of her life, having met Phil during a skiing trail.

Vera explains she and Phil put the land under a conservation agreement to have these trails and create a place where ski enthusiasts can socialize and enjoy the outdoors.

"My favourite part about skiing, I think it's just that freedom of movement, you almost feel like you're floating once you get the feel of it. To be out in the woods and see the snow and the beautiful nature around you."

Froese notes the club is not a business and relies on volunteers to continue to function.
