Students at W.C Miller Collegiate in Altona have been sharing their musical talents this month in school and across the community during their annual celebration of Music In Our School Month.

Music In Our Schools Month engages music educators, students, and communities to promote the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools. Music teachers celebrate in many ways by offering special performances, lessons, sing-along's and activities to bring their music programs to the attention of administrators, parents, colleagues, and communities to display the positive benefits that school music brings to students and the public.

Miller Collegiate choir teacher Michael Dueck said they tried to celebrate with every form of music they have to offer.

"Throughout Altona and around town, but also in our school, we are making sure our student body is being fed music on a day to day basis, in the hallways, library the cafeteria and in the classroom using different types of events for the entire month."

Dueck added students performed at area schools this month and even in front of their peers during lunch hours using an open mic, which was very well attended often causing line ups to get into the performances.

"Whether it's something that makes your heart tick specifically, music definitely keeps the heart beat of the world going. So we need to recognize that music is one of those things that exists in the air not just in a formal setting with a conductor. Music is something we do all the time when we whistle during a walk, sing in the shower, we don't have to wait to be told to do music," explained Dueck.
