Today is World Cancer day, providing the opportunity to reflect on what you can do. Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, everyone has the power to take action to reduce the impact that cancer has. We all have a part to play in the fight against cancer.

South Central Cancer Resource in Morden is a non-profit organization that provides support, information and education regarding cancer and prevention of cancer to individuals and families.

"World Cancer Day is about showing those diagnosed with cancer hope, resources and support," said Clinical Coordinator with South Central Cancer Resource Office Deb Thiessen.

Thiessen went on to say the resource office is their to help people on their journey.

"We are the only local support group in the region, totally not for profit and we obtain all our support through different foundations. We help people get to and from their treatments while servicing a very large area from Emerson, Morris up to Manitou and north to Carman. Our biggest budget item is our transportation last year it was a total cost of $115,000."

Thiessen continued by saying South Central Cancer Resource Office is open to everyone with cancer needing treatment, no matter their financial status.

"When you have cancer we know it's expensive. Those affected are always having to travel for treatment from rural areas and many often don't have the support groups that some might, like family friends or even church groups. So that's why we are there just to eliminate that little piece of hardship for them. On World Cancer Day you want people to know you are there for them not just hear the words," noted Thiessen.

Thiessen also mentioned South Central Cancer Resource is always struggling to find enough help. Currently they are looking for volunteers, drivers for patients needing treatment, and reps for certain parts of the region that currently do not have one. There is one opportunity to celebrate in the region today and that's by joining the Pembina Valley Twisters, Red River Mud Bugs, and Morris Mavericks at their Cancer Care Fundraiser happening at the Morris Multi-Plex. Lots of great local hockey to watch, 50/50 draws and your chance to support Cancer Care Manitoba.
