The City of Winkler is looking at a traditional European traffic solution known to reduce accidents for 15th St. ahead of the Province's newest school construction.

The school is expected to open West of 15th St. on Roblin Blvd East by the fall of 2019, bringing added traffic congestion.

A 4-way stop at the corner of 15th St. and Roblin Blvd was ultimately rejected by council, citing concerns it could back up traffic to PTH 14.

Instead, a roundabout, a circular intersection popular in Europe, would allow traffic to flow continuously in one direction around a central island.

"It's scheduled for 2019," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says, adding council also hopes to see 15th St. widened as well.

Harder says the city wouldn't need permission from the Province to install a roundabout.

However, the city continues its fight with MIT to lower the speed limit on 15th St. from 70 km/h to 50 km/h.
