Winkler area teenager, Charlotte Kandt first picked up a recorder to play when she was only four years old, and now she is number one in Canada.

After advancing from the first round of the national music competition, Kandt went onto the final in Gatineau, Quebec this summer where she scored a 91% for her performance, finishing in first place.

"My dad is a music teacher and he also teaches recorder and I always found it very interesting what he did with the recorder, so I asked him if I could try it...and it grew from there," said Kandt.

During the school week, Kandt said she usually practices twice a day for half an hour.  Kandt said on the weekend she has an hour-long lesson with her dad, and then practices on her own throughout the rest of the weekend.

When it comes to the skill of playing the recorder, Kandt said learning various breathing techniques is very important.  "We do a lot of breathing exercises because there is not a lot of time to take breaks to breathe while playing."

Charlotte's dad, Christian said his daughter displays great bravery when on stage performing, something that makes him very proud.

Charlotte's goal is to return to the national competition in 2019, and says she is already preparing.
