A graduate of Northlands Parkway Collegiate in Winkler was recognized for her accolades in university basketball.

The Radisson Rookie Of The Year Award is given out by the University of Winnipeg, to one male and female athlete in their first year of eligibility, and who have had an outstanding season.

Mikayla Funk, a freshman player of the Wesmen Women's Basketball team, shares her reaction when receiving the title of Rookie Of The Year.

"It's insane; I did not expect this award whatsoever. To have been given this title is such an honour; I feel so privileged to have been given this."

She says even to be considered for this award a player needs to have gone above and beyond in their performance during the season, and have proven they will be an asset to the team down the line.

Looking back at her first year on the Wesmen team, Funk reflects on her journey from high school to university basketball.

"In the beginning, I was nervous and not confident; I thought I was honestly the worst player on the team. Throughout the year I have discovered I actually can play basketball pretty decently when I put my mind to it; it's all in my head."

With this season over, Funk is looking critically at her performance for next season. She says she needs to focus on consistency, getting her shots up and getting them in.

For the freshman players who will join the team, Funk encourages them not to give up and stick to it.

"It's going to seem pretty hard in the beginning, but keep going. You'll get used to it, and it will be the greatest thing you've ever experienced."
