Winkler's planning committee is hoping to see a minimum dwelling size by-law removed.

Mayor Martin Harder explains smaller homes are simply more affordable. Likewise, the committee questions why a home's minimum size is strictly regulated.

The planning committee recommended the minimum size of single-family dwellings reduced from just over 800 sq ft to 600 sq ft while continuing to monitor the city's housing situation.

"As you see the cost of housing going up... it makes it a little more difficult to ever get into a home," Harder says.

For some, a smaller home might be the answer.

"There's a lot of hype and media in regards to tiny homes, which I'm not sure if we're ready for, but that is the basis of the discussion; affordability and livability."

Harder notes there will be certain designated areas smaller homes will be acceptable.

In the future the committee hopes to see the elimination of a minimum house size entirely.
