Winkler has become a hub for new and unique eateries and restaurants.

In the last few months, Winkler has seen several new restaurants, eateries, and delis open their doors, with places such as That Burrito Place, Taco Time, King's Deli, and the soon to open Mr. Mikes.

Tanya Chateauneuf, executive director for Winkler District and Chamber of Commerce, explained why the community has been a host to so many new businesses.

"We have a community that supports a lot of variety. We have enough people in our community and enough diversity, that we are open to all of these unique eateries, as well as food stores that have been opening up," she said. "We have created an environment in Winkler where these sorts of businesses can flourish."

Opened by local entrepreneurs, family partnerships, and local businesses expanding into new territory, Chateauneuf said these restaurants and eateries have been successful thanks to the support of the community.

"The community has really knocked our socks off," shared co-owner of King's Deli Colton Schiller. "In the first two weeks, it's all new to us. There are things on the customer's side that aren't clear to them in the beginning, there's stuff on our side of the counter that isn't very clear to us. People have been so patient, and willing to give us another try."

Schiller opened King's Deli with his mother Carrie Hiebert, wanting to try something new, and was met success with the support of the community.

With a large variety of different kinds of restaurants and eateries in Winkler, there may be some concern of an over-saturation in the food industry work force. However, Chateauneuf said she believes the city has a well-balanced variety of employees, who fit the needs of the business community in Winkler.
