One local family has taken the grassroots approach to promote literacy in Winkler.

Arla Reimer together with her family created a mini-library kiosk at the end of their driveway with the hopes of attracting local book lovers. Reimer explains the idea is to share their collection with others, who then leave a book of their own.

Reimer says she heard of the idea from a relative in Ontario. "I just thought it would be really cool for our community to have one."

The mini library was installed last year and Reimer says they've seen many make use of the library.

"It's so fun for us to go out and check if there's any new books," she says. Anyone with a handful of books they'd like to share are encouraged to stop by Medora Bay and update their personal collection.

While other organizations and school classrooms have created mini libraries, Reimer says she wanted to create one with easy street access. "I'd love to see way more. It's a neat thing, you can make it part of your routine if you're going for a walk."

As a former teacher, Reimer says she hopes to pass on a love of reading.
