Friday night was the Winkler Family Resource Centre's annual literacy fair at J.R. Walkof School in Winkler

It normally takes place during February which is "I Love To Read" month. Nevertheless Cathy Savage, coordinator for the WFRC, says the event had a fantastic turn out with families dressing up as super heroes--this year's theme.

"The costumes have been amazing," said Savage.

There were a number of stations set also surrounding the super hero theme like a training course, a station to smash a tower of blocks, face painting, and guest readers.

"The children are engaged and have been liking all the events and the reading, and the parents are really happy to have a fun night out," Savage said.

According to Savage, a night like this is important, not only because it celebrates reading, but because it brings people together and spreads the word about the WFRC.

"We're all about helping families connect and being a part of our community," said Savage.

When children read and are read to from a young age, they often continue to enjoy reading as they grow older and benefit them through the rest of their lives.

"I'm extremely happy that everybody came out," Savage said. "It's been great."

The WFRC literacy fair hosted guest readers who shared books with the children.
