In a world becoming increasingly more reliant on technology, Winkler Family Resource Centre (WFRC) is working with families to spend more time outdoors.

Now in its third year, the Growing Up Green program has been encouraging mom's with preschool-aged children to enjoy the many parks in the area.

Nattalie Nikel with WFRC explains why they believe it's beneficial for kids to get out of the house.

"Especially for this program, it encourages mom's to see how much fun kids can have even with just little things like sticks or we bring out magnifying glasses. They get them, and they go around they look for bugs, they look for different things they can discover."

She notes another positive of this program is getting families to meet others in the community, and for those who are new to the city it's a chance to connect with people of other heritages and create fulfilling friendships.

Held in six-week session the group gathers in Bethel Heritage park hosting games, crafts, and other activities. Although Growing Up Green is a registered program Nikel says they offer a walk-in session at Winkler's Central Station, where kids can play, and moms can visit.
