A maintenance shop on a residential property in the Village of Osterwick, south of Winkler, was damaged by fire over the weekend. Winkler Fire Chief Richard Paetzold said they got called to the blaze early Saturday morning.

Upon arrival, Paetzold said smoke could be seen coming through the shop vents. He said they did get the blaze under control, but not without some challenges.

"We proceeded to open it (the roof) up to get water in it, and keep the fire to the attic. We had to open up some more to get rid of cellulose insulation.  Cellulose insulation is the bane of our existence because you have to pull it all out to make sure the fire is out," said Paetzold.

Paetzold explained that the previous night, the owner was doing some grinding work on the overhead door of the shop, when it caught fire, and thought the blaze was extinguished, but early the next morning found it had re-ignited.

He said each situation is different, but if ever a person finds themselves in a similar situation and have questions on whether a fire is extinguished, they can call 911 and the operator can call the fire department in a non-emergency way to come check things out.

Paetzold said the damage was kept to the attic of the shop. A damage estimate has not yet been determined.
