While Christmas often means feasting, for some of the hundreds of local residents that access food banks, the holiday dinner might not look the same.

It's the reason the Winkler and District Food Cupboard is calling for donations leading up to December 24. Food cupboard board member Menno Giesbrecht notes they see up to 350 clients every month.

However, he says the community is becoming more aware of the need since moving to Central Station at 545 Industrial Dr. "People are responding very positively, and we praise the Lord because it's His work."

One way to donate is at the Real Canadian Superstore in Winkler. "We know that sometimes there’s a big difference between dinner at our own house and what’s on the table just down the street," says Wayne Tyler, Manager, Real Canadian Superstore. "This year we want to inspire people in Winkler to make meaningful donations of funds and food to our local food bank so we can help bridge the gap between neighbours and make sure everyone has a happy holiday and nutritious food throughout the winter months."

Donations of nutritious non-perishable food items are welcome at the store's food drive bins. Monetary donations can also be made at the checkout for the holiday food drive.

"We are very fortunate... this is a true community," Giesbrecht says.
