The community continues to follow a Winkler couple and their infant son's journey of heartache and miracles.

Brody Unrau has spent much of his life in an Intensive Care Unit in Winnipeg.

Born at only 25 weeks gestation, Brody entered the world at 1 lb. 11 oz.

The Unrau's found out they were carrying twins halfway through pregnancy, but the second twin, Blake, was missing organs and only being kept alive by Brody.

Eric Unrau had to wait until his son was 47 days old before he could hold him

"Our son was working for that twin, with his heart, with his lungs, all of his body parts were working double," dad, Eric explains.

"We think that's why he's a survivor, he was already working so hard in the womb, and when he was born he had extra fight," mom, Randi says.

A surgery to separate the twins caused Unrau go into labour in November, 2016. Blake did not survive.

Since then Brody has been fighting a number of health battles.

Along with being diagnosed with Short Gut Syndrome, the biggest challenge was breathing as Brody's lungs were not developed.

"A lot of odds against him," Randi says.

Yet, throughout, Eric says their reliance on their faith in God has kept them going.

Surgeons and doctors have been baffled on multiple occasions as Brody made miraculous recoveries.

Doctors explained that due to a lack of enough intestine, Brody was simply "incompatible with life."

"It's definitely really stressful, ever since we've been in this we've had extra weight on our shoulders, it's been tough," Eric says

However doctors had no explanation when, during a surgery in May, they found nearly twice as much intestine than previously expected.

"We've been told many times his odds were very small of making it, even from the womb," Eric says.

Many nights they've been called into the hospital with the assumption Brody was going to pass away.

"Doctors would come in expecting Brody to pass away during the night, meanwhile we've been up with him praying, and a lot of other people had been praying as well," Eric says, only to see amazing improvement hours later.

"The medical system is amazing and we've seen that," Randi says. "But there are some things they just can't explain... other than that God is bigger."

Brody's story has become well known in the hospital, Eric explains as people come "just to see this kid everyone is talking about. It's awesome to watch how God is working through everything."

"Lots of people who didn't believe in prayer now are believing... it's really cool," Randi says. "We try to think of that when it's really, really hard. There's still things happening and peoples' lives changing."

While they've seen God intervene, Randi says they know God is in control, no matter the outcome.

"I just had to get to that point where I release him... "ok God, he's your kid if you take him I know he's safe with You, but it sucks."

"It's not easy at all," Eric says.

Thousands of people continue to follow the Unrau's story on social media

Throughout their entire journey, Eric says the community has been a huge support; something never to be taken for granted.

"So many people who come [to Ronald McDonald House] have circumstances thrown their way that are very challenging, and they don't have a community like ours... it's tough to watch," he says.

She says moving forward they continue to urge people to pray.

"It's so nice to know there's such a crowd of people behind you," Randi says.
