After leading the community for over a decade, Winkler's mayor is seeking a fourth term in office. On Thursday, Martin Harder announced his intentions to run for Mayor in the election this October.

Harder has served as mayor for 12 years, noting he's seen the city expand rapidly. Since beginning his tenure Harder has seen Winkler's budget double from just over $8 million to $16 million.

However, he says with many municipal leaders in the region expected to not seek re-election, experienced leadership could be in short supply.

"We need a steady hand, we need someone in the region who's been here... maybe I can provide that leadership."

If he wins it would extend his time in office to 16 years by the year 2022.

Harder says it wouldn't be possible without the support of his wife, Val, "a treasure I don't take lightly."

Despite the challenges, he says the job still brings him joy, though the complexity involved in municipal politics has increased, "it's certainly become a lot more demanding."

Harder also serves on the Province's Red Tape Task Force, as well as the Affordable Housing Committee.

If re-elected Harder says he will continue to ensure Winkler is a bright spot in the region and the province. In the end, he says the decision is in the hands of the people.

His reasons for running, however, come back to unfinished business, "when you see the number of projects that are still on the list and the growth and momentum of the community."
