The following is the Winkler Police Service Report for the period of January 30 to February 5, 2017, as submitted by the department.

 

A total of 62 files were opened for the week of January 30th to February 5th. The following is a sampling of these files:

 

January 31: At approximately 11:38 p.m., police received a complaint from a motorist who reported a Dodge Neon driving directly towards his vehicle while he was traveling on 1st Street. The caller advised that he was now following the Dodge Neon and he led police to Roadrunner Bay, where officers spoke with both parties. The driver of the Dodge Neon explained that he was upset because he believed the other driver had intentionally shined his headlights at him. The dispute was mediated by police without charges.

 

February 2: At approximately 4:55 p.m., police received a report of an attempted break-in to a residence on Elm Bay that occurred sometime between January 21st and February 2nd. Police were advised that the victim had noticed damage to their residence that appeared to be from someone attempting to force their way into the home. The incident remains under investigation.

 

February 3: At approximately 10:37 p.m., officers were called to a dispute at a residence on Orion Lane. When officers arrived, they spoke with a 44-year-old male who told police that his 23-year-old son had punched him in the mouth and briefly choked him until another family member was able to intervene. Police located the 23-year-old suspect attempting to hide inside the residence and he was placed under arrest for the assault. He was later released with a court date and a condition to not attend within 100 meters of his father’s residence on Orion Lane.

 

February 4: At approximately 6:29 a.m., officers were called to the Boundary Trails Health Centre where the RCMP had arrested a male for assaulting a 19-year-old female. Police learned that the assault had taken place at an address in Winkler and that following the assault, the suspect and the victim, both known to each other, had attended the hospital. With the incident taking place in Winkler, the investigation was turned over to the Winkler Police Service. The 20-year-old male was arrested by our officers on charges of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Assault, Utter Threats, and Mischief Under $5000. He was later released on a Promise to Appear in Morden Provincial Court on March 14, 2017. The victim was treated for injuries sustained during the assault and released from hospital.

At approximately 8:57 a.m., officers were again called to the address on Orion Lane where they had attended the previous evening. When police arrived, they learned that when they had released the 23-year-old male the previous evening on a condition not to attend his father’s residence, he immediately returned to that address. The male was located inside the residence and placed under arrest for breaching the conditions of an Undertaking Given to a Peace Officer. The male was later released on a Promise to Appear in Morden Provincial Court on March 14, 2017 where he will answer to the original assault charge, as well as the new charge for breaching the Undertaking.
