Winkler Police are investigating a break and enter reported at a residence on Victoria Street. On May 25, shortly after 4:00 a.m, police received a call from a resident whose family was woken by a noise at their kitchen window.

The complainant explains they saw two males running from the scene, and the screen to the window had been cut.

Police patrolled the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Below is the Winkler Police Report for May 14-27:

May 14 – Loss Prevention Personnel of Superstore advised police of a male being held in custody for attempting to steal approximately $46 worth of items. Police attended, served the 23 year old male a written caution for theft and released him on scene.

May 15 – While conducting a traffic stop police noted a strong odour of marihuana emanating from inside the vehicle. Approximately 10 grams of marihuana was located along with drug paraphernalia, which was relinquished and destroyed. The 18 year old male driver was released with a verbal warning for Possess Marihuana.

A female reported that she was the victim of a fraud as someone had used her Social Insurance Number to obtain a credit card in her name. The female cancelled the credit card and is in the process of having her identification documents reissued.

Police were dispatched to a residence on Southview Drive regarding a male who assaulted his ex-girlfriend and fled the scene. The 23 year old male later attended the Winkler Police Service where he was arrested for Assault and Fail to Comply with Conditions of an Undertaking. He was remanded into custody and appeared in Provincial Court on May 18th, 2018 where he was released with a future court date and conditions.

May 16 – Police were advised of a theft that occurred at Superstore involving a male who stole approximately $128 worth of electronic items. The male fled the scene on foot and could not be located, but was recognized by police through video surveillance footage. This file is still under investigation.

Police were dispatched to Triangle Oasis to help mediate a verbal altercation between two males. Police attended and spoke with both males who agreed to leave each other alone. Motel management also attended and requested that one of the males leave the property for the evening.

May 17 – A report was received of a moped travelling in a dangerous manner along Tanager Way. Police spoke with the owner of the moped and issued him a verbal caution for allowing his 15 year old son to operate the unregistered moped.

A report of vandalism was received from a female who stated that her vehicle was keyed while parked behind the Southland Mall on May 16th.

May 18 – Police attended a residence on Crystal Crescent regarding an altercation between two females. Police confirmed that no assault had taken place and police transported one of the females to another residence where she would spend the night.

A complaint was received of a reckless driver speeding along Main Street and cutting off vehicles. Police attended and located the driver who received a verbal warning for his dangerous manner of driving.

May 20 – At approximately 12:30 a.m. police were dispatched to the Winkler Centennial Library parking lot regarding a vehicle playing loud music and a group of people standing next to it. Police spoke with the group who agreed to turn down the music.

Shortly before 3:00 a.m. police received a complaint regarding loud music and yelling in the backyard of a residence on Reitze Avenue. Police attended and spoke with a group of individuals having a fire, and the homeowner stated he would ensure they would keep the noise down.

Police were dispatched to a local business regarding several people suspected to be on the roof of the building. Police located two male youths and two female youths on the roof of the store and released them from the scene with verbal warnings. Access was gained to the roof from an unlocked security ladder.

While on patrol police came to a stop behind a pickup truck playing extremely loud music. Police used their PA system in an attempt to instruct the driver to turn down the music, however the music was so loud the driver did not hear the instructions. Police activated their emergency lights and stopped the vehicle on Main Street. While speaking with the driver police noted the odour of liquor on his breath and an open box of beer inside the vehicle. The male complied to a demand for a breath sample which resulted in a “Warning” reading. The 19 year old male was issued a ticket for Carry Liquor in a Vehicle, his vehicle was impounded and his driver’s license was suspended for 72 hours.

A report was received of two individuals who spray-painted on a church and were currently hiding behind vehicles in the parking lot. Police attended the area but were unable to locate any suspects and did not note any signs of spray paint on the church or any nearby buildings.

May 21 – At approximately 1:00 a.m. police received a report of a suspicious male walking along Mountain Avenue. The complainant stated that the male suspect made a rude gesture toward him two times as he drove past. Police patrolled the area but was unable to locate the male suspect.

May 22 – A female reported that her wallet containing approximately $1600 was stolen from her shopping cart while inside the garden centre of Walmart. Later that same day, a female forwarded police the missing wallet that she found on a shelf at that same location. The wallet was returned to the complainant who confirmed that nothing appeared to be missing or stolen.

May 24 – Multiple reports were received of someone knocking on the door or window of a residence and running away. These incidents occurred on Harmony Lane, Cedar Avenue, 8th Street, 9th Street and Tanager Way. Police patrolled these areas however no suspects were located.

An employee of a local business reported that an unknown individual transferred $2,270 from the business’s bank account into a personal account. A second transfer was attempted but denied by the business’s banking institution, who is investigating this matter further.

May 25 – A resident of 2nd Street advised police that a suspicious vehicle was parked on her driveway and did not belong to anyone residing in the home. Police contacted the registered owner of the vehicle who was unaware that his vehicle was missing and stated it must have been stolen. Several other vehicles on the victim’s driveway were rummaged through as well. This file is still under investigation.

May 26 – Shortly after 2:00 a.m. police observed a vehicle southbound on Highway 32 travelling over 100 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. Police pulled over the suspect vehicle and upon speaking with the driver noted that he had bloodshot eyes and smelled of liquor. The driver complied with a demand for a breath sample which resulted in a “Fail” reading. The 20-year-old male provided two additional breath samples resulting in readings of 90 mg% and 80 mg%. The male’s driver’s licence was suspended for three months, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he received tickets for Speeding and Drive an Unregistered Vehicle.

At approximately 4:40 a.m. police were dispatched to Imperial Bay regarding three suspicious males. Police located two of the males, one of whom stated that two males were attempting to fight him and threw a beer can at him, but did not wish to press charges. Police advised both males to go home for the rest of the night.
