An opportunity for women to take part in a casual hockey league is available at the Morden Access Event Centre.

Women's Rec Hockey was created by the collective work of community member Kaitlynd Heinrichs and Morden's Rec Programer Stephanie Dueck.

"Kaitlynd was interested in Women's Rec Hockey," says Dueck. " Together we decided to find a time slot."

Dueck handles program registration as well as promoting the program, while Heinrichs works as the team organizer.

This is the second year Women’s Rec Hockey has been made available. Dueck says last year they had a smaller number of women sign up.

Both Dueck and Heinrichs decided that in order to make the event more accessible, the season was cut down to nine sessions once a week.

Beginning November 5, Heinrichs says each session will host fun scrimmages against each other, with the possibility of competing against other communities.

"Just very casual, we get together and have a scrimmage. Tentatively we have a game booked with a team from another community. If that goes well, we can book more in the future."

Currently, there are 15 women signed up for the season, Dueck invites women of all skill levels to come have fun and get out of the house over winter.

Full hockey gear is required; with CSA approved helmet and face-guard, neck-guard, gloves, elbow and shin-guards, hockey pants, jersey, shoulder-pads, and mouth-guard.

While equipment is to be brought by those who have registered,  Heinrichs says there are options for those who don’t have equipment but want to sign up at the Event Centre, or cheaper equipment found at second-hand sports stores.

Women 18 and up can register by heading to the Morden Access Event Centre, calling  (204) 822- 5431, or online.
