The Mayor of Steinbach is preparing for a busy week as the Association of Manitoba Municipalities holds its annual convention in Winnipeg. Chris Goertzen is the president of AMM. He says they will again discuss ways to get more infrastructure dollars from the federal and provincial governments. Goertzen notes municipalities get only eight cents from every tax dollar yet are responsible for 60 percent of all public infrastructure. He says this is a longstanding issue that requires a lot of perseverance.

"When you look at the challenge we face as municipalities, it's not going to be one quick fix that will solve it, it's incremental. And so, whether it's the gas tax model that has been a real success for us or it's the request to have the PST rebated back to municipalities instead of being paid, those are things that are important to municipalities. It's not going to be one thing that solves it, it's going to be a number of things."

Meanwhile, Goertzen will seek re-election as AMM President Tuesday afternoon, a post he has held for the past 18 months following the resignation of his predecessor Doug Dobrowolski who stepped down to run, unsuccessfully, in the last provincial election.

"I stand for re-election here at AMM. We look forward to seeing what the membership has to say. It's been a real pleasure serving the members for the last year-and-a-half and I hope to do that for another two years."

Dobrowolski is also running for President.
