Staffing numbers at the Winkler and South Junction Border Crossings will be beefed up.

Canada Border Services is reducing the hours of operation at the Snowflake and Piney Ports of entry due to declining traffic volume.

Spokesperson Loretta Nyhus says the move will also involve reassigning one officer at each of those crossing to the Winkler and South Junction Ports where they will be needed.

Winkler Port of Entry handles about 46,000 vehicles per year compared to just over 4,000 at Snowflake.

About 35,000 vehicles pass through South Junction every year compared to Piney's 8,700 vehicles.

The changes will take effect on October 1st.
