Thousands of people got together this past weekend  to support the fight against  breast cancer.

Melissa Friesen of Altona participated in the Run for the Cure marathon.

She was joined by family and friends,  creating a group of 23 Altona area people who raised 11-thousand dollars.

Friesen says when you realize how many people are affected by the disease it sends shivers down your spine.

She  has a history of cancer in her family,  and says as a result,  self examinations and mamograms come a little earlier in life.

The 15th annual Run for the Cure raised 23.4 million dollars nationwide.
