The City of Winkler is hoping to eliminate the haze of cigarette smoke that sometimes surrounds public entrances like the arena and curling rink.

"If you're having to go in and out in a cloud of smoke it makes it a little uncomfortable," Harder says.

However, until the city employs a full-time by-law enforcement officer, Harder says instead of creating a new by-law signage will be used to deter smoking near public entrances such as the Winkler arena.

"To make people aware of it and what's expected," Harder says.

While any public venue could be eligible for a sign, he explains their intent is not to completely ban smoking from public grounds, only high traffic areas.

"Common courtesy means we want to control some of the activity that takes place," he says.

The  planning department is continuing to enquire with surrounding municipalities to determine what steps other communities have taken to address the issue.
