An outdated electrical system could put the future of the Manitoba Stampede in jeopardy.

Pat Schmitke, president of Morris's Valley Agricultural Society (VAS), notes the current system was installed over 50 years ago and no longer meets code with Manitoba Hydro.

“There's been a lot of changes between then and now,” he said. “Things have been added. You need a plug-in here, you put a plug-in there. Codes have changed. It's kind of a hodge-podge of electrical that's got us through to this point but now it's time to change it up and make it up to the required standards of Manitoba Hydro and that will carry us well into the future.”

Phase 1 of the electrical upgrade was completed last year at a cost of about $49,000. That work took place on the west side of the grounds. Phase 2, which includes the grandstand, rodeo arena, barns, and offices, could cost as much as $100,000. Schmitke says that work needs to be completed as soon as possible, but notes it likely won't get underway until after this year's Stampede.

VAS is asking for the public's financial help to make sure the event can continue on into the future.

“The Manitoba Stampede is an important part of our community and an important part of the region and we certainly want to make sure we're continuing on into the future,” said Schmitke.

A fundraising social is planned for March 5th at the Morris MultiPlex .

Individual donations are also being accepted.
