Colwyn Abgrall is Golf Manitoba’s 2019 Provincial Men’s Amateur champion.

The 22-year-old Niverville product fired a final round even par 72 Thursday at Quarry Oaks and finished two shots ahead of Austin Dobrescu of Shilo.

‘It’s obviously a great honour,” said the Southwood member shorty after signing his scorecard at the 27-hole layout near Steinbach. “There’s lots of history with the number of past champions on the trophy so it’s an awesome feeling to have my name on there.”

Abgrall was 71, 71, 72, 72 for a 72-hole total of two-under par 286.

“I wasn’t anything special,” noted Abgrall who lost the Provincial Match Play final to Dobescu earlier this month at Breezy Bend. “It’s not like I had my A-plus game out here. I figured par would be a very good score even with the tees up forward. That was the game plan coming in, make some pars and executed pretty well with a score of two-under so I just took my chances out there.”

Abgrall, Dobrescu and Jordy Lutz of Elmhurst are our province’s Willingdon Cup team.

The 2019 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship which will be held August 5th - 8th in Hammonds Plains and Timberlea, Nova Scotia

“That’s going to be special,” said Abgrall who has also qualified for the United States Men’s Amateur Championship next month in North Carolina. “That’s something I had my sights set on this year too so It’s going to be real special representing Manitoba.”

Altona’s Josh Neufeld finished in fourth place.

The soon to be fifth-year member of the University of Manitoba Bisons golf team had five birdies on his scorecard and was three-under par 69 in his final round.

“It’s a fun week as usual,” said Neufeld. “This is the highlight of the golf season every year. The course was in awesome condition and I got lucky enough to be with great pairings everyday. Today was a blast. Cole (Peters) and Tyler (Doyle) are two great friends of mine back from junior golf so it made it easy to have fun out there today.”

Tyson Ehnes of Winnipeg finished in a tie for 37th place at plus 28 while Bobby McNair of the Carman Golf Club was plus 38.
