The Town of Carman has been discussing possible changes to school zones by Carman Elementary School and Carman Collegiate.

At a council meeting Thursday night a by-law passed first and second reading to implement their decision.

"We're changing all times from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday," says Mayor Brent Owen. They will also be seasonal from September to June.

He says the distance of the school zone by the elementary school will stay the same as it is close to the playground, but the Collegiate will see some changes in how far the reduced speed is in effect for.

"Carman Elementary will be the same as the Collegiate as far as the times, and we're shrinking the zone at the Collegiate a little shorter. Bring it in from the east to the west," adds Owen.

Currently the west end of the zone stops by 2nd St SE, but will be moved in about 20 feet just before the back lane west of the Collegiate.

Due to the crosswalk currently in this location and a desire to not block the crosswalk signs, it is uncertain how far the signs will move to reflect this change in distance.
