Nancy Howatt of Sunset Ridge Angus at Manitou loves to give back and she did just that by selling a steer calf and donating the money raised to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

This was the third year in a row Howatt has taken a calf to the Killarney Auction Mart and made the donation.

“I’m a practicing beef farm so I can’t help out in the grain side with the foodgrains and this is my way of sharing my farm product. I’ve always wanted to help in some way with groups that deal with humanitarian food security. And now with the Covid situation world food security certainly needs a helping hand.”

The steer calf weighed in at 670 pounds and sold for $2.11 per pound. That money and a few extra dollars raised put the total at $1,600.

“It’s hard to explain why I do this but it’s a feeling that you have to experience and giving back is just something I want to do. You have to be passionate about what you are giving and it’s a really great feeling.
