About two dozen volunteers showed up north of Altona on Monday to help harvest 150 acres of wheat in support of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).

"Just a great big thank you," said Isaac Froese, coordinator of the CHUM (Communities Helping Undernourished Millions) grow project. "Every year it seems a bit overwhelming at times...but when it all comes together, it's rewarding," he added, noting it's a good feeling to know they are helping people less fortunate. "One of my friends always says, 'who else can do what we do?', and that's a very true statement. Glad we can help," said Froese.

2021 marked the 24th year of the CHUM project, the 21st year located on the field just east of Highway 30.

"We get good involvement from the family that allows us to have the land year in and year out, from local dealers, input suppliers and seed dealers. We get a fair bit of cash donations...throughout the year. Bring it all together and we have another crop standing here this year," said Froese.

As for the crop, Froese noted it looked quite good heading into harvest.

"I think it can go past forty bushels an acre, which is good this year, we're actually hoping for fifty," he noted, adding the trucks were lined up and prepared to haul that amount.
