The Morden and District Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of two awards to two organizations that Morden residents believe are exemplary.

Morden Community Thrift Store (MCTS) has been awarded Not For Profit of the Year, and Merle Block has been named Entrepreneur of the Year.

In the last few months, MCTS donated half a million to various organizations in the community and recently, $150,000 towards the Agassiz Medical Centre expansion.

Volunteers and area support makes everything possible, says Wiebe, and it allows them to give almost everything they sell back to the community.

For Merle Block of Checker Signs, he says the recognition of Entrepreneur of the Year is shared with his partner and wife, Susan, and employees.

"I've been working my tail off for a lot of years, not trying to be the Entrepreneur of the Year, but just to carry on with an entrepreneurial spirit," said Block. "I've always thought of myself as a bit of an inventor and I've done so many little projects over the years, that I'm glad to be recognized, but at the same time I'm frightened to be in the public eye."

Both block and the Morden and Community Thrift Store will be presented with their awards at the Morden & District Chamber of Commerce Awards Gala, November 7th.
