The saying goes, “When it rain, it pours”, and for some parts of Pembina and Red River Valleys that’s exactly what happened Wednesday when a couple rounds of thunderstorms moved through the region.

“To review, the first round of storms worked across the region during the early morning hours of Wednesday between, say, 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., with a second round, and in some cases much more rain packed, hitting the region over the lunch hour and early afternoon,” said CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “Bottom line, this was a widespread rainfall event, which for some areas, has made a good dent in the moisture deficit we’ve developed over the course of a dry Spring.”

The following totals are for the 24-hour period of June 9th, and include figures from PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers, Environment Canada and the Manitoba Ag Weather Network:

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Sumner noted another low pressure system, with more moisture, is expected to impact Southern Manitoba.

“The low will track into the region beginning Thursday night, with showers developing and lasting throughout the day Friday. We will also have a cooler day in store, as highs land around 21 to 23.”

As for the weekend, sunshine will return Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures will warm back up to above seasonal for this time of year.

“We’re looking at 26 to 29 both days, with 30 degree daytime highs back in the cards for next week as we see another ridge of high pressure develop, allowing for a return to summer-like warmth.”
